Nopal Cactus, also known as prickly pear cactus, is considered one of the original South American superfoods and has been used for thousands of years by inhabitants of the Sonoran Desert region as a food and for enhanced vitality. In Nahuatl (the Aztec language), the word for nopal translates to "fruit of the earth," as this cactus was valued highly for its wide variety of uses.
